Pointer Terms of Service

Effective 27 October 2026. What changed: a warning never to look at the Sun; the minimum age now applies to friend mode, since sky mode needs no account; how to report misuse; how we tell you about changes; a limit on our liability; and how to raise a complaint.

These terms are an agreement between you and Omer Hochman, the individual developer who makes Pointer ("we"). They cover the Pointer app for iPhone and Android and the Pointer web pages at pointer.hochly.com. By using Pointer you agree to them. If you do not agree, do not use Pointer.

What Pointer is

Pointer points your phone at the sky, at your parked car, or at a friend who agrees to be pointed at. It is free. There are no ads, no subscriptions, and no in-app purchases. Friend mode is not available in the EU, EEA, UK, Gibraltar, Jersey, Guernsey or the Isle of Man; there Pointer works in sky mode only. How we handle your data is in the Privacy Policy.

Who can use Pointer

Friend mode requires you to be at least 13, or older where the law of your country sets a higher age for consenting to the use of your data. Sky mode needs no account.

Your licence

We give you a personal, non-commercial, non-transferable, non-exclusive, and revocable licence to use Pointer on devices you own or control, under these terms. Pointer, its name, its design, and its code belong to Omer Hochman or his licensors, and these terms give you no other rights in them. Do not copy, sell, rent, or reverse engineer Pointer, except where the law allows it. Parts of Pointer are open-source software under their own licences.

Your account

Friend mode needs an account, which you create by signing in with Apple, with Google, or with a code we email to you. Keep the email address or account you sign in with secure, and keep your phone locked: anyone holding your unlocked, signed-in phone can use friend mode as you. You are responsible for what you do with your account.

Acceptable use

Reporting misuse

If you think someone is using Pointer to track you without your consent, end the session, Forget them, and turn off location access for Pointer in your phone settings. Then email abuse@hochly.com. Report, on a friend or on a name under Nearby, starts that email for you. Block, under Nearby, hides that phone from you for good, and neither of you can add the other. We aim to reply within 2 working days and may suspend the account involved. If you are in danger, contact your local emergency number first. Friend locations are kept for at most 20 minutes, so we may have nothing to share.

Accuracy

The compass, your location, a friend's location, and the positions of the Moon, the planets, and the space station are estimates. They depend on your phone's sensors and signal and on public orbit data, and they can be wrong or late. Pointer is not a navigation or safety tool. Do not rely on it for navigation, safety, or emergencies.

Never look at the Sun, directly or through a camera, binoculars or any lens, including during an eclipse. Pointer shows where the Sun is; it does not make looking at it safe.

Ending

You can stop using Pointer at any time, and you can delete your account. We may suspend or end your access to friend mode if you break these terms, especially the rules against tracking people, or where needed to protect other people or the service. Where we reasonably can, we tell you why. We may also change, pause, or stop Pointer or any part of it.

No warranty

Pointer is new and still changing, and is provided free, "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, including the implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement, to the extent the law allows. We do not promise that it will be accurate, always available, or free of errors.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of Pointer, or from not being able to use it, including indirect or consequential loss. This does not limit or exclude liability for death or personal injury, for gross negligence, for wilful misconduct, for fraud, or any other liability the law does not allow us to limit. Where our liability cannot be excluded but can be limited, it is limited to CHF 50 in total. Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have as a consumer under the mandatory law of the country where you live.

Changes to these terms

We may change these terms for a reason, such as a change to Pointer or to the law. We post the new version here with a new effective date and a short note of what changed, at least 30 days before it takes effect unless safety or the law needs it sooner. If you do not agree, stop using Pointer and delete your account.

Feedback

If you send us ideas or reports, we may use them to improve Pointer without owing you anything.

Complaints

If you have a complaint, email us first at privacy@hochly.com and give us 30 days to try to fix it. This does not stop you from going to court or to a consumer body, or change any time limit the law gives you.

Governing law and courts

These terms are governed by Swiss law, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. The courts of the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland, have jurisdiction, but not exclusively. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of the country where you live, and you can bring a claim in the courts there.

App stores

If you got Pointer from the App Store or Google Play, Apple's or Google's own terms also apply to your use of their store. These terms are between you and us, not Apple or Google, and Apple and Google are not responsible for Pointer or its support. On iPhone, Apple's standard licence for apps also applies; these terms add to it, and where they differ, these terms govern between you and us.

Other apps

Pointer can open other apps and websites, such as your browser or a map app you pick for directions, like Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze. Their makers run them under their own terms and privacy policies, and we are not responsible for them or the routes they give.

The rest

If a court finds part of these terms invalid, the rest still applies, and the invalid part is replaced by a valid one that comes as close as possible to its purpose. These terms and the Privacy Policy are the entire agreement between you and us about Pointer.
